I recently performed at the same venue as Jacki, she has an exceptional voice, and is willing to chances ‘ in the moment’ with voice improvisations, there’s elements of Jazz , blues in her music as well as folk country, a totally unique performer and very real. A fantastic live act.

WARNING Nostalgia Moment: In the early seventies there was an album called Cold Fact by Rodriguez I saw at most parties I went to, it was one of those albums that fell into the category of alternative at that time. Alternative back then didn’t mean grungy guitars or the equivalent to today, it meant non mainstream it very cool in some way. I couldn’t locate a good live recording of Rodriguez (without the whole audience singing it with him). I felt it was very relevant to acoustic guitar music of the seventies and extremely nostalgic, I decided to post about this youtube video version of the song

Tim Buckley recorded a couple of legendary albums in the late sixties and early seventies. He died in 1975, and was also the father of the late Jeff Buckley. I thought it would be great to post about this video because a lot of players may not be aware of Tim’s beautiful songs, and also anyone that knew his music, may not have seen this. The tune is Morning Glory, recorded at the BBC.

I’ve always liked the texture of a nylon string guitar and voice together. One of my favorite acoustic nylon string singer songwriters is the Swedish based guitar player Jose Gonzalez.

I find the nylon string guitar to be a very different instrument to the acoustic steel string, although the tunings are the same, the texture of the nylon string guitar is not same as the steel, the way the strings feel and the way they respond, each requires a particular set of skills to master. Jumping from one instrument to the next e.g. a steel or electric guitar, you will find your need a little time to adapt and get used the way the instruments react. Each instrument has its own virtues, the same song, with same fingering played on both a nylon string and a steel can easily sound like another arrangement. The beauty of the nylon string classical is that there is a long tradition of tunes arranged for it, although the tunes can be played on a steel string, it requires a certain amount of work to get the tunes sit right.

Keep an eye out for Jose Gonzalez touring, he’s in his own niche and has quite a fan base of people of a very broad age group.
