Here’s an interesting acoustic guitar video by Preston Reed. In it he uses a very percussive technique, tapping with both the right and left hands. What I like about it is his very relaxed approached, the tune is called Slap Funk . Although Preston is using a rather impressive looking approach to playing the guitar, the piece maintains its musicality, whereas many of the players using these type of contemporary methods of playing seem to get carried away with the showmanship. Thanks to Kirk Grosch for introducing me to Preston’s playing.

I woke this morning and virtually everything I touched just didn’t happen, I set out to rework a blues variation in G as an educational piece and it went skewiff. So since I was in a Blues mentality, I decided to reposat a DADGAD fingerstyle Blues I had written a year or so ago.

Now what’s the story on this. I’ve noticed that a lot of Celtic players are looking for DADGAD songs because if you’re doing a gig, twenty seven Irish Ballads in a row is just not going to work. In performance, we need things to that create an element of surprise, or sometimes bring familiarity but in a different package. This tune is a simple foundation to build a tune around or improvise with. It is just an idea and a platform to jump off.

You may use, post it elsewhere if you like. But hey it’s mine. What is important is that you play it in time, in tune and with feeling, if not please don’t play it.

Finger Style Dadgad Blues

I can’t believe that I’ve had my couple of Acoustic Guitar Sites up for about a year and a half now and after at least 200,000 visitors no-one has said “Hey, what about posting about Steve Morse”. I saw Steve play when he was pretty young and was on tour with Paco, DiMeola and McLaughlin. His playing was very fresh when I saw him and it took some of the intensity out because he had a bit of a country blues edge to his playing. So here is8 minutes of classic Morsey on acoustic (nylon) with a pickup. The first tune is an old Dixie Dreg tune. The youtube is from the early nineties. Brilliant.

I first heard of Kelly Joe Phelps recently when reading an Acoustic Guitar magazine ( Acoustic Guitar site), my favourite guitar magazine for the last 14 years. Fortunately I got a Kelly Joe Phelps album called Tunesmith Retrofit, (Kelly Joe Phelps albums) I’m convinced that this guy is one of the great new singer songwriters who will still be around in a number of years. Although he is his own person, I hear a flavour of Dan Fogelbergs older stuff and also Tim O’brien. I’m very impressed by his fingerstyle accompaniment and the sincerity of his music. So here’s a youtube acoustic guitar video of Kelly Joe Phelps playing his brand of Country Folk Blues
