I love these guys, New Grass Dawg music. David Grisman on Mandolinn, Tony Rice on Acoustic Guitar, Rob Wasserman on Bass and Mark OÇonnor on violin. It looks like it’s from the early eighties. If you want a great album Hot Dawg is the one. I like the way they trade lines. They’ve taken Bluegrass to new height and mixed it with Grapelli Style Jazz.

Here’s, more of the very brilliant soulful country blues acoustic guitar player playing slide. This guy is the flavour of the month for me when it comes to acoustic guitar with a slight country blues edge to it. As stated in another article I recently purchased his CD called Tunesmith Retrofit. And while I’m at it I thought I ‘d just like to point out the need for people to purchase music instead of downloading their music via file sharing programs.

PLEASE NOTE: The original tune posted here was removed from Youtube because whoever uploaded it breached copyright (Not Me), this is an unfortunate thing which happens on the web, many people do not respect the rights of artists and composers. I have replaced it with Kelly Joe performing a Country Blues song live Feb 2009

Here’s a youtube of the legendary guitarist called Clarence White, he was a member of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers. The tunes are called I am a Pilgrim and Soldiers Joy, both are standard tunes in the Bluegrass repertoire. Clarence played a Martin D28 from 1935, it is now owned by the great Tony Rice a player of contemporary bluebrass (New Grass) and Bluegrass. Clarence also played on some of the early Monkees tunes. He unfortunately died in 1973, he is remembered with great respect by many guitar players across the world, his beuatiful guitar playing will live on.

Every now and then we think we are going a bit crazy, sound familiar? Come on be honest.

It just occurred to me today that in all the time I’ve had my acoustic guitar blogs going, both here, and at acoustic guitarist, I have never posted about Leo Kottke. So sanity is now restored as I have realised my oversight and Leo gets a mention. I first heard Kottke in 1972 when I was standing in a Fender Guitar shop, it sort of disappeared of the map but the memory stuck. I was quite shocked at his ability to play a twelve string in that manner, until then I’d only heard strummers and had not yet heard Ralph Towner with his dark chords and unusual appoach, nor had I heard the legendary Robbie Basho. So to hear Kottke at the time was an eye opener to the potential of acoustic guitar and was a break away from the players that I liked such as Beck, McLaughlin, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass, it was new, fresh and at the same time familiar because of its country straighter sounding harmonies. I have only seen Leo Kottke play live once, and if you haven’t seen him, let me tell you he’s a good as a joke teller as guitarist.

This video is some years old and is medley and also features slide guitar
