I’ve always liked the texture of a nylon string guitar and voice together. One of my favorite acoustic nylon string singer songwriters is the Swedish based guitar player Jose Gonzalez.

I find the nylon string guitar to be a very different instrument to the acoustic steel string, although the tunings are the same, the texture of the nylon string guitar is not same as the steel, the way the strings feel and the way they respond, each requires a particular set of skills to master. Jumping from one instrument to the next e.g. a steel or electric guitar, you will find your need a little time to adapt and get used the way the instruments react. Each instrument has its own virtues, the same song, with same fingering played on both a nylon string and a steel can easily sound like another arrangement. The beauty of the nylon string classical is that there is a long tradition of tunes arranged for it, although the tunes can be played on a steel string, it requires a certain amount of work to get the tunes sit right.

Keep an eye out for Jose Gonzalez touring, he’s in his own niche and has quite a fan base of people of a very broad age group.

Peter Spragues music was something I became aware of in the eighties. When I was studying with jazz legend Ike Isaacs I’d always turn up and say “Ok uncle Ike, who’s hot? ” and he’d mention different players that I’d never heard of. One such player is a guy called Peter Sprague. I went straight out at the time and got a copy of Na Pali Coast on vinyl, it is still in my collection of coveted guitar albums that other guitar players I grew up with look at and go yeah…I rember that. The album was on the Concord label, to jazz experts, that would mean someting and to other people who are up to speed on drummers, it had Peter Esrskine on drums, not to mention Bob Magnusson on Bass and Steve Kujala on Flute and Tripp Sprague sitting in on one tune.

The beauty of having a guitar blog site like this is I can dig into my musical history and introduce all these astounding guitar players that you as a reader may never have the opportunity of hearing.

So here is Peter Sprague some years later, live in his lounge room, doing what he does best, play brilliant guitar.

The worlds greateste guitarist and who that may be has been in hot discussion around me of late since someone asked the question in one of my online surveys. There are so many different styles and how to compare. I really like Julian Bream and so does my friend Mark Anthony over at Hotel Mark site . Yes I love Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Joe Pass, Tony Rice and many others but amongst the classical players Julian is my favourite. I have three recordings of the Bach lute suites on vinyl and Julians version is the most emotive of the lot.

So here’s a reminder of what a beautiful classical guitar player sounds like. The worlds best guitar player? who cares, so long as it sounds good. My dear friend Ike Isaacs (late) always spoke very highly of Julians playing.
