Acoustic Guitar – Neil Finn

Don’t Dream it’s Over

It’s always great to see musicians with a sense of musicality be successful in commercial music.  It is about 35 years since I first saw Neil Finn perform live with Split Enz, the New Zealand band at a legendary place in Sydney called the Bondi Lifesaver.  At that time he as a bass player and he jumped around a lot and had a lot of face paint and very politically incorrect clothing and hair. To watch him develop as a songwriter and end up fronting a successful band like Crowded House  restored my faith in commercial music temporarily; commercial music is often full of dance puppets churning out very  non musical content, thank you Neil.

I like Neil’s approach to melody and also his choice of chords is usually a little more interesting than your average players.  This song has a very simple chord pattern but the melody sits beautifully against the chords.  Neil’s music could easily be overlooked by people who aren’t interested in commercial music but if you’ve ever seen him stand up up and sing solo with just an an acoustic guitar you’d understand how good he is.  Other players play lots of notes and make us spellbound with their  virtuosity, that’s a wonderful thing to be able do, but hey there’s so much in

I have to admit that’s a very passionate performance. It proves that sometimes commercial music doesn’t have to be cold and souless
