All they care about is trying to impress other people rather than trying to make good music WITH other people. I agree that listening is an essential skill for good guitarists. Not just in the interest of being courteous towards other players, but also because it will make you more of a musician - someone that is dedicated to making beautiful sounds. In the piano world it's called "to audiate". A musician needs to actually listen to what they're playing, not just bang out notes like a robot. People like the one in the scenario you describe do that because they are full of pride, IMHO.
